Antique Bracket Clocks, often known as shelf clocks, were made in the same time period as their taller relatives the longcase clocks. A lot of London manufacturers not only made longcase clocks but also made bracket clocks. In the mid 1600 century bracket clock cases were made from woods like walnut, mahogany and rosewood. Quite often antique bracket clocks were known as spring clocks because instead of a long pendulum they worked with a coiled spring to drive the movement with the help of a short pendulum. Bracket Clocks did not become popular with clock makers outside of London and therefore almost all high quality examples are from the British Isles.
