Today’s grandfather clocks, or standing clocks also called long case clocks, relays on a pendulum attached to an anchor. The swinging of the pendulum causes the anchor to rotate a gear, which in turn makes the clock to tick. Weights further help power the clock and makes the mechanism work . Although the technology has over the years gotten better, the grandfather clocks of today still reflect the ingenuity of man. The long case clock stands upon the floor and is typically 1.8 to 2.3 meters (6 to 7.5 feet) in height. The name grandfather clock was adopted after the song "Grandfather’s Clock," written in 1876 by Henry Clay. It is believed that the grandfather clock was developed to support the heavier clock mechanisms witch makes the standing clock accurate.
